PITTSBURGH HATE CRIMES UPDATE

 The Pittsburgh Tragedy

Five people were killed and one seriously wounded this past Friday in Pittsburgh. The unifying theme in the attacks against these five, who were of diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds, is that each was a victim of a hate crime. A Jewish woman, an African American male, and three Asian Americans, including one of Indian descent were killed in this senseless violence. The other who was seriously wounded was also another man of Indian descent.

The Indian American community must join with others to mourn these tragedies, as well as rally together and show our support for Anil Thakur and Sandip Patel and their families.

There will be two events on Friday, May 5th in Pittsburgh which members of the Indian American community could attend:

4 p.m. Friday May 5th---Downtown Pittsburgh, Market Square--Diversity, Respect, and Peace: A Unified Community Response:

This will be a rally to express outrage at the recent hate crimes in Pittsburgh and how they can be prevented from happening again.

8:30 p.m. Friday May 5th Ya-Fei Chinese Restaurant, Robinson Town Center. This will be a Candlelight Vigil. It will enable as many people as possible to express sympathy to the victims' families

In addition, many have asked how to make contributions to help the families of Anil Thakur and Sandip Patel. The contributions in memory of Anil Thakur will help support his wife and two children who are still in India. Contributions to Sandip Patel will help cover his medical costs.

Checks can be made out to:

Hindu Jain Temple
615 Illini Dr.
Monroeville, PA 15146
In the Memo field please label the check for either "Anil Thakur" or "Sandip Patel"
