Indian
Americans are among the fastest growing immigrant groups in
America. The 2000 Census shows that the Indian American population stands at nearly 1.7 million people. That is approximately a 106 % growth since 1990.
While the Indian American population has experienced
explosive growth in the last 35 years, Indian Americans have
had a presence in the United States as early as 1790.
The early immigrants, mostly laborers and students,
struggled very hard to succeed in their newly adopted
country. Opposition by white labor, the British government,
and discriminatory laws made life difficult for Indian
immigrants.
Despite the tremendous obstacles, a small group were able
to find ways to thrive; one of whom even became a Member of
the United States Congress! Their stories provide insight
and inspiration for the relatively young Indian American
community.
The community now is one of the most impressive
demographic groups in the country. With one of the highest
income and education levels and dominance in the health
care, high tech, and hospitality industries, the Indian
American community has the potential to exert tremendous
influence in the nation's politics.
