Nunwan, India -- Suspected Islamic militants on Tuesday killed nine Hindus and wounded two dozen others as devotees slept in tents along a Kashmir pilgrimage route, in an attack India immediately blamed on arch-rival Pakistan. One attacker was killed when Indian troops returned fire, while others fled into surrounding forests. Furious pilgrims at the scene chanted slogans against the Indian government for failing to ensure security for the massive annual procession to the Amarnath cave.

* Body of slain reporter to be returned to U.S.

Karachi, Pakistan -- The body of Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal journalist kidnapped and slain by Islamic militants, was taken today to Karachi's airport for a flight to the United States, Pakistani officials said. The body, in an oak casket covered with red flowers, was transferred by police convoy from a mortuary at the Edhi Foundation, a Pakistani relief organization, said foundation official Rezwan Edhi.

* Hindus in Kashmir hold protest strike

Jammu, India -- Many Hindus in Kashmir observed a general strike yesterday to protest against a terrorist attack that killed nine religious pilgrims as they prepared to hike to a Himalayan shrine. Meanwhile, in new violence, eight more people died. A local leader of the state's ruling National Conference party was slain in Srinagar, and police said they suspected Islamic separatists were to blame.

* Bangladesh - US amphibious exercise continues

Dhaka, August 07 -- A combined group of Bangladesh Armed Forces and the US Army Special Force Wednesday participated in an amphibious beach landing maneuver in the sandy coasts of the southeastern Cox's Bazar of the Bay of Bengal. Officers and soldiers from the First Para-Commando Battalion ofBangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force and the Operation Detachment Team Alpha of the US Army Special Force took part in the amphibious mission under the ongoing "Balance Buffalo" exercise, according to the official Bangladesh News Agency.

* Daniel Pearl's remains moved to Pakistan airport

The remains of murdered US reporter Daniel Pearl have been taken to the airport in the southern Pakistan city of Karachi to be flown back to the United States. Pearl's remains will be leaving Pakistan more than six months after he first disappeared in Karachi while researching a story on Islamic militants against a backdrop of the September 11 attacks on the United States.

* Security stepped up for Hindu pilgrims after Kashmir attack

Security has been stepped up for Hindu pilgrims in Indian Kashmir, after nine devotees were gunned down by suspected separatist rebels. The attack has not deterred the thousands of pilgrims who have resumed their three-day hike to a shrine believed to house the incarnation of Lord Shiva.

* Peace talks likely in September between S.Lankan government, rebels

New Delhi, August 08 -- Visiting Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando said peace talks between the government and the Tamil Tiger rebels could take place as early as September. "A date will be fixed, which will most probably be in Septemberor thereafter," Fernando told a news conference here Thursday. Fernando,, here for meeting with his Indian counterpart, added the peace process "could be delayed" if early national elections were called that might see political differences in the nation.

* Bomb explodes in Nepal's capital

Kathmandu, August 08 -- At least five people were seriously injured when a powerful bomb exploded at a college here Thursday morning, according to a local police officer. "The bomb exploded about two minutes after a group of a dozen people shouting slogans to support the anti-government guerrillas came at the Applied Business College in Kathmandu," the police officer said. "No one has claimed the responsibility for the bomb explosion up to now," he said, adding that "the police suspected the bomb explosion was caused by the anti-government guerrillas."

* India's foreign minister fears al-Qaeda may be regrouping

India's Foreign Minister Yashwant Sinha has voiced concern that al-Qaeda and the Taliban may be regrouping. Mr Sinha also announced he will visit Afghanistan later this week to discuss some of these issues. He said that although al-Qaeda and Taliban forces have been hit hard in Afghanistan, they were believed to be regrouping and reorganising their cadres.

* EU to deploy 'largest ever' observer team for Pakistan polls

The European Union will send its "largest ever fleet of observers" to monitor elections in Pakistan in October, a top EU official has announced. The EU's chief election observer John Cushnahan said the large team would be deployed "keeping in view the importance of elections being held in Pakistan and its impact in the region".

* Four killed in Kashmir attack

Suspected Islamic militants have shot dead four members of a Hindu family in Indian-administered Kashmir. The victims included a woman and two children, aged two and four. The attack took place in a remote village in Rajouri district, which is near the fronline dividing the territory with Pakistan. It comes just days after a major attack in which nine Hindu pilgrims were killed. Police say the militants forced their way into the victims' residence, andd fire indiscriminately with automatic weapons.

* Pearl begins last journey home

A plane carrying the remains of murdered U.S. reporter Daniel Pearl has left Karachi International Airport heading for Los Angeles. The wooden coffin had been driven through cleared streets of the southern Pakistani city in an armed convoy consisting of six police vans, a US consular vehicle and three ambulances.

* Poll official in key Gujarat visit

* Nepal opposition 'ready' for polls

Nepal's opposition parties say they are gearing up for voting following a Supreme Court ruling on Tuesday which paved the way for fresh parliamentary elections. But the opposition remained doubtful as to whether fair and peaceful elections could be held under the emergency rule imposed by the government.

* Indian Journalist Arrested

New Delhi, India -- A well-known Indian journalist was arrested Wednesday on charges he assaulted a federal investigator, a move that comes as the government faces new claims it is cracking down on the media. Aniruddha Bahal, who works for the news and entertainment Web site Tehelka.com, was granted bail hours after he was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation, India's equivalent of the FBI.

* 'Suicide trio' behind raid

Pakistani police said yesterday they had evidence that three men who blew themselves up on Tuesday in Kashmir were the same gang that killed six people in an attack on a Christian school earlier in the week. The trio were challenged by police when they tried to enter the village of Khabadar in Pakistani Kashmir about 20km from the scene of Monday's attack, police said.

* India says Taliban, al-Qaeda are regrouping

New Delhi, August 08 -- Ahead of a two-day visit to Afghanistan, India's External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha said Wednesday that the Taliban and al-Qaeda were regrouping and posing a serious threat to the entire region. Sinha, who leaves for Kabul via Dubai Friday night, said the regrouping along with other terrorist groups "poses a serious threat not only to return of peace and stability in Afghanistan but also risks the spread of instability in our region," reported Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) on Thursday.

* Lankan foreign minister arrives in New Delhi

New Delhi, August 07, -- Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando arrived here Wednesday night on a day's visit for talks with India's External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha on a range of issues including developments in the peace process in the island nation. The Indo-Pak standoff is expected to figure prominently during Thursday's parleys with Indian leaders. Fernando will be meeting Sinha for a second time since the Indian minister's visit to Colombo last month.

Brussels, August 08 -- The European Union Wednesday strongly condemned what it said was the senseless attacks on Hindu pilgrims at Nunwan in Kashmir on 6 August. New Delhi, August 07 -- The Kashmir Committee headed by former Law Minister Ram Jethmalani on Wednesday demanded postponement of Jammu and Kashmir assembly polls saying the killing of Amarnath pilgrims showed hat the conditions in the state were not "ripe" for holding free and fair elections. It also demanded that for holding free and fair elections in the state it was essential that Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah should resign and pave way for imposition of President's rule, reported Press Trust of India on Wednesday.

New Delhi, August 07, -- Five European Union (EU) diplomats have held talks with Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) chief minister Farooq Abdullah and All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) leaders separately on the forthcoming assembly elections in J&K state. "We are here in Srinagar on an assessment tour," delegation leaders Michel Stenberg of Denmark told reporters at the end of a two-and-a- half hour long meeting with APHC leaders at its headquarters in Srinagar on Wednesday.

New Delhi, August 07 -- India's former law minister Ram Jethmalani, who heads a private group of interlocutors on Kashmir, on Tuesday met India's Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee with a suggestion that New Delhi should formally invite the Jammu and Kashmir separatists for talks. * Tehelka scribe arrested, released on bail

New Delhi, August 08 -- Aniruddha Bahal, one of two journalists who posed as arms merchants and exposed corruption in weapons deals in India, was arrested here yesterday and released after three hours amid widespread criticism. A city court released Aniruddha, who heads the investigating team of the website tehelka.com, on bail. He was arrested on charges of assaulting, obstructing and abusing an officer of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday. The arrest sparked widespread protests from mediapersons and politicians, who dubbed it an assault on the freedom of the press.

* India's stocks ends in negative territory at BSE

New Delhi, August 07, -- India's stocks lost their early gains and select heavyweight scrips even showed moderate falls pushing the sensitive index down by 14 points at the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) on Wednesday on late sell off by speculators and Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs). Mirroring the downslide, the BSE Sensitive Indexd firm at 3042.28 and later improved further to the intra-day high at 3055.22 before falling back to close at 3009.48 as against Tuesday's close of 3023.26, netting a loss of 13.78 points.

* World Bank sees India's improvement in poverty reduction programs

New Delhi, August 07 -- The World Bank has praised India for its efforts in poverty reduction, but felt it has to do a lot more to make implementation of programs more effective, according to the Press Trust of India Wednesday. The World Bank Vice President Gobind T. Nankani, who was in India recently to monitor World Bank aided poverty reduction projects, said there has been marked improvement in the implementation of poverty reduction programs but a lot more could be done.
