* India,US to discuss sophiticated tech deals (reuters): U.S. Undersecretary of Commerce Kenneth Juster will hold talks this week with Indian officials on allowing sale of sophisticated technology to New Delhi, banned for years under U.S. law, a spokesman said on Monday. U.S. embassy spokesman Gordon Duguid said Juster would discuss the issue with senior Indian officials on Tuesday and Wednesday, another sign of warming ties between the two countries which were on opposite sides during the Cold War. "We have discussed these issues regularly. But those discussions had to be limited in the past because of the (trade) sanctions," Duguid told Reuters. "The very fact we are having this meeting shows the relationship has moved forward." U.S. firms were not allowed to sell sophisticated equipment or technology to Indian firms under U.S. legislation banning sale of dual-use technology that could be used for both peaceful and military purposes.

* Bill Gates gives $100 million to fight AIDS in India (reuters): Microsoft Corp Chairman Bill Gates announced on Monday a $100 million grant to battle HIV/AIDS in India, which has the world's second largest number of victims of the deadly disease. The announcement came as Gates, sporting a "tika" on his forehead, began a four-day trip to India with a visit to an AIDS clinic in the Indian capital, where he talked with HIV-positive patients. The donation -- the largest single-country grant by his charity, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation -- would provide better access to HIV prevention measures for truck drivers, migrant workers and other mobile people who are seen as vulnerable to HIV infections.

* To Asians a spicy chew, to doctors a deadly habit

The paan stores are easy to find in Jackson Heights. Just look for red gobs of spit on the sidewalk on 37th Street. For centuries, South Asians have chewed paan, a sweet mixture of lime paste, cardamom, fennel, honey, areca nut and, often though not always, flavored tobacco, all wrapped in a betel leaf. They placed the concoction in their cheeks, relished the flavor and then spit out the juice.
