* PepsiCo's Nooyi is Fortune's 4th most powerful woman (IANS): Indra Nooyi, the Chennai-born president and chief financial officer (CFO) of global giant PepsiCo, has been ranked the fourth most powerful businesswoman by Fortune magazine in its upcoming October 14 issue. The New York-based 46-year-old was ranked 10th in Fortune's list of 50 Most Powerful Women in Business last year, barely months after she was named the new president and CFO at the American soft drinks major. * Sunil Dutt raises funds for cancer in the US (IANS): Veteran Indian actor and politician Sunil Dutt, who is touring the U.S. to raise funds for his cancer foundation, says he has plans to launch chapters of his organisation in Dallas and Boston. Dutt said he had managed to collect $100,000 for the Nargis Dutt Memorial Foundation at one event in Long Island. "Fundraisers have already been held in Seattle ($200,000), Vancouver in Canada (Canadian $125,000) and Portland." Islamabad -- Leaders of Pakistan's minority Christian, Hindu and Sikh communities called on Monday for two more days of protests and mourning on October 5 and 6 to mark the murder of seven Christian charity workers in Karachi last week. Shahbaz Bhatti, the leader of the All Pakistan Minorities Alliance, said a rally would be held in the Pakistani capital Islamabad on October 5 to mark an ''anti-terrorism day'' while joint memorial services would be held around the country the following day.

Islamabad -- U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for South Asia Christina Rocca met Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday and called for dialogue with India over the disputed Kashmir region. India has refused Pakistan's offer of talks over Kashmir, saying Islamabad must first end its sponsorship of cross-border infiltration by Islamic militants into Indian-held Kashmir, where a third round of state elections was taking place on Tuesday.

* Pakistan-based Kashmiris question poll turnout

Islamabad -- Kashmiri leaders based in Pakistan rejected Indian claims of a heavy turnout in the third phase of elections in Indian-controlled Kashmir and said on Wednesday only 10 to 11 percent of voters had cast ballots. Ghulam Mohammad Safi, secretary general of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), an umbrella organisation for several separatist groups in Indian-ruled Kashmir, said even the lower estimate was achieved by Indian troops through coercion and harassment.

* Islamic militants renew assault in Indian Kashmir

Srinagar, India -- Suspected Islamic militants renewed a bloody assault in Indian Kashmir on Wednesday as India pressed ahead with controversial state elections which have triggered a bout of anti-poll violence. After a third phase of voting on Tuesday -- in which 18 people died in the bloodiest polling day since elections started -- another 10 died on Wednesday in separate attacks by suspected militant separatists.

Jammu, India -- Guerrillas in Indian-controlled Kashmird fire on activists of the pro-India governing party Wednesday and were suspected in the bombing of a bus heading for a Hindu pilgrimage on a day of violence that left at least 10 dead, police and hospital officials said. The attacks came a day after voters went to polls in the third of four phases of Jammu-Kashmir state elections, which separatist Islamic militants have vowed to disrupt saying they are rigged in favor of pro-India politicians.

Srinagar, India -- An explosion killed six paramilitary troopers escorting poll officials during elections in Jammu-Kashmir on Tuesday, police said. The blast hit a vehicle carrying Border Security Force troopers in Panzgam, 35 miles south of Srinagar, the summer capital of the state.

* India says 41% of voters cast ballots in Jammu-Kashmir

New Delhi -- India's federal Election Commission said that 41% of registered voters cast their ballots Tuesday in Jammu-Kashmir state elections marked by violent attacks on polling stations. The Election Commission said the figure covered four districts: Anantnag, where it said 25% had voted; Pulwama, where it recorded 28%; Kathua, where it reported a 59% turnout; and Udhampur with a reported 59%.

* Kashmir has bloodiest polling day

Anantnag/Srinagar, India -- Eighteen people died in the bloodiest polling day yet in Indian Kashmir as a third round of elections were held in the troubled state. Gunmen killed eight people on a bus on Tuesday, and six troops died when their vehicle ran over a land mine, believed to be planted by Islamic militants. Two militants, a political activist and an Indian soldier died in separate incidents.

* Nepal army: nearly 3,000 Maoist rebels killed since November

Kathmandu -- Nearly 3,000 Maoist rebels have been killed by government troops since November, the Royal Nepalese Army said Tuesday, but the rebels continue to strike the capital, as they did last week. "At least 2,820 Maoist terrorists have been killed since November, when the army was ordered against them, but despite the huge damage, the threat hasn't decreased," army spokesman Col. Deepak Gurung said.

* Bangladeshi journalists protest increased attacks on them

Dhaka -- Nearly 1,000 journalists marched through the capital Wednesday to protest increased attacks on them for their reports on alleged corruption, gangsterism and religious intolerance. A legal rights group blamed the attacks mostly on the supporters of Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's governing coalition. There was no immediate government reaction.

Today brought more violence as a bomb detonated on a bus carrying Hindus on a pilgrimage, killing one passenger and injuring 18 near Jammu, officials said. There was no official word on the identity of the attackers, but suspicion fell on Islamic militants. More than 135 political activists, candidates, soldiers and civilians have died since the elections were announced in August. Nevertheless, 41 percent of registered voters in the disputed Himalayan province braved the violence and ignored a separatist call for a boycott.

McLEAN, Va. -- The spread of HIV is expected to accelerate in Asia and Africa over the next decade, with 75 million cases likely in five of the world's most populous countries by 2010, a U.S. intelligence report predicts. * Mother Teresa closer to sainthood

Vatican City -- Mother Teresa moved a step closer to beatification Tuesday, when a Vatican committee approved a reported miracle attributed to the late Roman Catholic nun, church officials said. The Vatican's Congregation for the Causes of Saints committee that handles the process leading to sainthood approved reports that an Indian woman in her 30s was cured of a stomach tumor due to the intercession of Mother Teresa, officials said.
