* US envoy says no evidence Bangladesh is a terrorist haven (AFP): The US ambassador in Bangladesh said she had no evidence to back a recent report in Time magazine that the country had become a haven for Islamic extremists including al-Qaeda supporters. The US embassy in Dhaka "follows terrorism issues closely and has no evidence to support" the report in the US-based magazine's October 21 issue, Ambassador Mary Ann Peters said in a statement. "Nor is the embassy aware of any basis for the story that a ship called the M.V. Mecca dropped off a large al-Qaeda group in Chittagong last year," Peters said. She said that while terrorists have been found in many countries -- including the United States -- Bangladesh was a staunch member of the coalition against terrorism and not a "hotbed of radical Islam."

Editorial/Op-Ed

* Musharraf and the mullahs

Pakistani leader Pervez Musharraf has become a casualty of his own artifice. In his effort to neutralize his strongest political adversaries ahead of the election held earlier this month, he bolstered the power of Pakistan's most volatile political players - religious fundamentalists. The power that fundamentalists have gained in the election is without precedent in Pakistan, and will probably effect U.S. efforts to ferret out al Qaeda terrorists along the border regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

* Musharraf gets a surprise

Pakistan has spent more than half the time since its founding being governed by generals--and though President Pervez Musharraf says otherwise, military rule is going to continue for the foreseeable future. Parliamentary elections were held Oct. 10, but most people stayed away from the polls, perhaps because they regarded the whole exercise as a fraud.

* India calls for world to adopt renewable energy policies

New Delhi -- India on Sunday called for the adoption of renewable energy policies, especially in developed countries, to reduce gases believed to be warming Earth's atmosphere. Rising temperatures threaten to melt polar ice caps, causing sea levels to rise and threatening the existence of low-lying islands. Many scientists also warn of an increase in floods, droughts and other natural disasters due to warmer weather.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor Ltd., the local unit of the world's third-biggest carmaker, said it will import the Camry vehicles from Japan to tap demand for sedans, a growing slice of a $3 billion-a-year car market.
