* Home-made jet trainers soon, declares George * (ANI)

"India is ready to launch indigenously built jet trainers, according to George Fernandes, Defence Minister. Speaking to reporters here on Friday, Fernandes said in reply to a question that the state-owned Hindustal Aeronautics Limited was "very much ready with the indegenously built jet trainers. Yes, it is very much ready"..... According to negotiations with BAE Systems, 22 completely built units will be delivered to Indian Air Force and the remaining 44 manufactured under the HAL. ndia's air force, the world's fourth largest, needs the planes to train pilots to help end a string of aircraft losses in the past decade. The United States and Britain are in the thick of the battle for this much-prized deal. While Russians too joined the fray, as for the fireworks, it may be a straight fight between the British Aerospace Enterprise Systems Hawk ZJ 100 and L-159, a US-Czech joint venture in which the former has the major stake."

Jersey first to use new citizenship test
Foreigners applying to become U.S. citizens in New Jersey will be the first to try a new citizenship test that officials hope will serve as a model for a national standardized exam. For years, immigration officials, advocates and attorneys have bemoaned the fact that naturalization tests, while based on subject matter compiled nationally, are administered differently from city to city, with varying results. The tests have also been sharply criticized for placing too much emphasis on historical facts rather than tenets of citizenship like liberty and freedom. U.S. immigration officials are developing a new test that would address both sets of concerns. They hope to have it in place nationwide by the end of 2004.

Bustling Bombay's hidden treasures
Bombay -- Because so few taxis are air-conditioned and ventilation comes solely through thewindows, there's no blocking out the realities of this city. As we snake through the heavy traffic to the accompaniment of incessant horn honking, beggars lie in wait at every red light. Disfigured children, wailing mothers holding sick-looking babies, people missing arms and legs -- they all come to the taxi window and plead for money, making the wait for the light to change seem like an eternity.

On the run in Bombay
It's jokingly called "Delhi Belly," but visitors to India who get it aren't laughing. Ranging from mild diarrhea caused by eating unfamiliar foods, to serious diseases such as amebic dysentery or typhoid from ingesting contaminated food and water, it can spoil a trip or even put you in hospital. Digestive upsets are common perils in any number of developing countries. But few nations are as much of a potential breeding ground as India.

Unraveling the mystery of masala
Mention Indian food and what's the first thing that comes to mind? A mysteriously exotic cuisine that is colorful, hot and oh, so spicy. Freshly ground spices, referred to as masalas, play an important role in Indian fare, and the flavorful masalas can range from very hot to quite mild. For a newcomer, more intimidating than any dash of curry might simply be navigating the menu. A basic Indian menu offers a variety of dishes that share a common foundation of herbs and spices.
