WTO chief downplays U.S. concerns on outsourcing jobs
WTO director-general Supachai Panitchpakdi
WASHINGTON (Reuters): The director-general of the WTO, Supachai Panitchpakdi, on Feb. 26 said Americans’ worries about the outsourcing of jobs to countries with cheaper labor was overblown. He said the U.S. will create an average of more than two million new services jobs a year over the next decade, “compared to roughly 200,000 services jobs that will be outsourced.”
Speaking at the National Press Club, Supachai said that United States’s economic prosperity and global growth depended upon the success of multilateral free-trade deals. Supachai said that job losses from trade deals should be mitigated with job training and education.
