Hearing of Government Reform Subcommittee on Human Rights

May 12 –– The hearing of the Government Reform Subcommittee on Human Rights and Wellness entitled ‘Decades of Terror: Exploring Human Rights Abuses in Kashmir and the Disputed Territories,’ predictably called by old India-foe Chairman Dan Burton (R-IN), met some criticism from other legislators for being one-sided.

Among those that lashed out at Rep. Burton, was Democratic Rep. Joe Crowley (D-NY), Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch and Senator Robert Bennett, both Utah Republicans, in a letter to Commerce Secretary Don Evans, complaining that the Bush administration may not be using “fair and reasonable” procedures to calculate anti-dumping duties on shrimp exporting countries India, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Equador, and Brazil.
