Acrimonious Parliament adjourns

Lalu Prasad Yadav
Parliament adjourned on June 10 till the budget session amid loud protests by a defiant opposition that vowed to continue a shrill campaign for the removal of “tainted” ministers (those accused in various criminal cases) in the government.

After the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) protests against the “tainted” ministers had crippled business and forced repeated adjournments since June 8, both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha passed by voice vote a motion of thanks on the president’s address to a joint session of the two houses.

The Lok Sabha, the lower house, adjourned sine die moments after that, as the opposition started shouting slogans demanding the sacking of ministers in Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s government who have been charged in criminal cases –– Lalu Prasad Yadav, M.A.A. Fatmi and Mohammed Shahabuddin, all belonging to Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal.
