Immigrants on 5-day fast, vigils

Hundreds of immigrants went on five days of fasting and vigils to highlight ‘egregious violations’ of their basic rights.

The fasting and vigils were organized by the New York Immigration Coalition at the Interfaith Center in Manhattan from Sept. 15.

A year ago, hundreds of immigrants and their supporters set off in buses across cities in the U.S. in what was described as the “greatest immigrants rights mobilization in American history.”

The march led to the formation of the Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride.

“One year later, immigrants have not seen any attempt by the government to act on the Freedom Riders’ demands and address the egregious violations of their basic rights. Immigrants continue to be detained, deprived of their civil rights,” the coalition said.
