Immigrants end fasting to demand reform of U.S. immigration laws

Immigrants demanding reform of U.S. immigration laws ended five days of fasting and vigils on Sept. 20.

According to the New York Immigration Council, the fasting and vigils were part of a ‘National Week of Action’ to focus on immigration issues that affect immigrant workers. From low wages and working conditions to the treatment of immigrants after 9/11 and prison abuse of detainees were among the issues that were highlighted during the protest week. Groups from over 70 cities across the country joined in commemorating the first anniversary of the Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride, described as the largest of its kind in the country’s history, that took place last year.

The immigrants group has also been involved in lobbying with U.S. Congress and Senate members on the need to reform the immigration laws in order to safeguard their rights.
