NEW DELHI: Long jumper Anju Bobby George and 400-meter runner Manjeet Kaur won gold medals in the first Asian All Star Athletics Championship in Singapore on Sept. 28, the Athletics Federation of Indian (AFI) announced.
Anju, who won the broad jump bronze at last year’s Paris World Championships, covered a distance of 6.66 meters for the gold, AFI said in a statement.
For Anju, ranked sixth in the world, the gold medal at Singapore was the second international title that she won within a week.
On Sept. 23, she clinched gold at the Annual Super Meet at Yokohama in Japan, upsetting Athens Olympics champion Tatyana Lebedeva of Russia. The Indian long jumper cleared 6.61 meters to beat Lebedeva, who also recorded 6.61m, on the basis of her better second jump, according to the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF). Yuka Sato of Japan had clinched bronze with a leap of 6.44m.
Earlier last month, Anju narrowly missed a bronze medal at the World Athletics Meet in Monaco, as she finished fourth with a leap of 6.61m.
Olympian Manjeet won the second gold medal for India at the Singapore meet with a time of 53.08 seconds in 400m. India also won three silver medals and one bronze.
The best Indian silver medallist on view at the Singapore meet was P. Shankar, who achieved a personal best of 50.74 seconds in the 400m hurdles. It was the second best time ever recorded by an Indian.
Hari Shankar Roy rewrote the national high jump record by winning the silver medal with a jump of 2.25m. Earlier this year, Roy broke the decade-old national record that stood in the name of Chandrapal Rathi, who had jumped 2.17m at Chennai. Amarjeet Singh won the triple jump silver with a distance of 16.17m, while Piyush Kumar won the bronze in 100m with a time of 10.73 seconds.
