Dissatisfied voters, groups continue calls for recounts in Ohio and elsewhere

By Ela Dutt

Even after most of the dust has settled and long after Presidential candidate Senator John Kerry has conceded defeat, some electors in Ohio and elsewhere continue their campaign for getting recounts.

Indyvoter.org is among several organizations and individuals that are busy holding public hearings on voters who encountered problems when they went to the polls.

“Every eligible voter has the right to have his or her vote counted,” said Naina Khanna of the Illinois League of Young Voters and Indyvoter.

Many voters came to give their account of long waits, alleged voter intimidation, etc., in Columbus Courthouse Auditorium, Ohio at a meeting organized by the Election Protection Coalition, an umbrella organization of several voter-rights organizations. on Nov. 13 and 15.

“The idea that what we’re doing is about sour grapes is ridiculous. This is about disputing the process, which is clearly flawed. We have heard testimonies that describe machine malfunctions, and systematic disenfranchisement of people, particularly first-time voters, students and people of color

facing problems at the polls,” Khanna contended.

The Coalition is calling for a complete count of every ballot cast, as well as thorough investigations into the origin of each instance of alleged disenfranchisement, voter suppression, and mechanical or electronic malfunctions.
