Danseuse Sudha Sekhar gets lifetime achievement award

Sudha Chandra Sekhar, an acclaimed danseuse from Oak Park, MI, recently received a lifetime achievement award from the Michigan Dance Council.
A resident of Oak Park, MI, since 1978, she has performed for diverse local audiences. Sekhar now runs a dance school Hindu Temple Rhythms in Oak Park.
She also teaches dance classes at the Bharatiya Temple in Troy, the Hindu Temple of Canton, and Amma Center in Ann Arbor.
In April 1958, she performed in the presence of then prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru in honor of Walter Nash, then prime minister of New Zealand, at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, news reports said.
In March 1989, she presented her daughter Vidya in a 48-hour solo dance marathon in aid of the American Cancer Society, earning a record herself for 48 hours of continuous vocal and nattuvangam (cymbals) accompaniment. She was also awarded the 1989 Dance Teacher of the Year title by the Michigan Dance Association.
