States considering proposals to deny illegal immigrants government services
With Arizona passing measure to deny illegal immigrants government services, many other states are considering similar proposals, the Newsday reported.
Known as Proposition 200, the measure requires people to produce proof of immigration status in order to obtain government services. It also lays down punishment for government workers who fail to report such illegal immigrants trying get aid.
Georgia, Idaho, California and Colorado are considering a similar measure. In Colorado and California the measure is expected to go up on the ballot in 2006. Anti-immigration groups have argued that if such an action is not forthcoming at the federal level, the only option left is for states to introduce measure to check illegal immigration. Although the Arizona measure is expected to face legal challenges, that has not discouraged other states from going ahead. California had passed Proposition 187 in 1994 but it was challenged in court and could never become effective. Some groups in Georgia are considering a mixture of California and Arizona measures.
In Idaho a resolution is being taken to state legislators in February. It requires proof of citizenship or legal immigrant status to apply for medical assistance.
