Udai R. Bishnoi, a professor of agronomy/seed science and technology in the department of plant and soil science at the Alabama A&M University, Huntsville, received the Seed Science Award at the 2004 international annual meetings of Crop Science Society of America (CSSA) in Seattle, WA, from Oct. 31 to Nov. 4, a press release said.
The event was held in conjunction with the American Society of Agronomy (ASA) and Soil Science Society of America (SSSA).
Bishnoi teaches seed production, seed biology and crop production, and has published over 75 research papers. He has pursued research in seed storability and vigor testing techniques for triticale, cotton, mungbeans and soybeans.
Earning his degrees from Rajasthan and Punjab Agricultural Universities in India and Mississippi State University, his expertise resulted in the development of three triticale cultivars and their seed multiplication and certification standards.
He has contributed to development of seed science and technology programs in Sudan, Kenya, Gambia, India, Poland and Argentina. A fellow of ASA and CSSA, Professor Bishnoi has served for six years as an associate editor of Agronomy Journal, the release said.
The award is presented in recognition of distinctive service to the development and use of quality seeds in agriculture. The principal criteria for the award are significance and originality of research, contributions to extension and service activities, educational activities relative to training seed scientists and professional interactions with seed-related organizations.
