Indo-Asian News Service

SRINAGAR: A leader of Jammu and Kashmir’s main opposition National Conference party was among six people killed in separate incidents of violence on Dec. 29, police said.

Separatist guerrillas shot and wounded Farooq Zargar, vice president of the youth wing of the National Conference party, at Kawdara in downtown Srinagar. He died two hours later in a hospital. The shooting occurred when Zargar had gone to attend funeral prayers in the memory of a relative.

A militant, described as a top leader of the Harkat-ul-Jehad-Islami (HUJI) and wanted in several cases of murder and abduction, was killed in a firefight with security forces near Jammu. Another militant and two women were killed in a shootout with security forces in south Kashmir.
