New Delhi : President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who was treated non-surgically for a fractured shoulder, was discharged on Feb. 8 from hospital.
The 74-year-old leader was advised to take rest and physiotherapy before he can resume his hectic schedule.
Doctors had performed a special non-surgical procedure on Feb. 7 to treat the president who fractured his right shoulder on Feb. 6 when he slipped during a walk at the herbal gardens in the presidential complex. A “closed reduction of fracture” was performed on Kalam. This is a procedure in which the doctor sets a broken bone without making an incision or cut in the skin. The president was discharged from the Army Research and Referral Hospital here, but doctors said the right shoulder joint would remain immobilized for healing. “He has shown very good recovery. He is in fine health,” said a statement from the hospital. Before leaving, Kalam visited the experimental laboratory at the hospital where he viewed a demonstration of medical procedures with a dummy. He also met the staff and a few children.
A presidential aide said: “He can work in his office in Rashtrapati Bhavan, but he cannot leave the place or go on tour.”
Doctors attending Kalam would review his condition after a week. The president would also have to undergo physiotherapy to revive normal use of the shoulder.
