NEW YORK –– Snigdha Sur, 15 from Queens, NY, a veteran of Spelling Bee competitions who made it to the final round of the national Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., last year, was among those who watched an offbeat musical about the contest. A participant of the many citywide competitions sponsored by the Daily News, she has competed for the title over five times. She attended the 25th Annual ‘Putnam County Bee,’ an offbeat musical creation of Tony award-winning composer and lyricist William Finn, Rachel Sheinkin, and Rebecca Feldman, where six misfits try to outdo one another while tackling words, Sur expressed the familiar excitement of what it felt like to be on stage under pressure. According to the Daily News, Sur said, “It’s a lot of pressure. But then you just have to jump in and try. In the end, you realize the whole experience is worthwhile.” Sur is an honor student at Irwin Altman Middle School, Floral Park, Queens, where she has participated as a “junior fellow” in a medical research program. She is the pianist for her school’s jazz band and plays flute in her school’s concert band. She is also a library volunteer. Sur has earned recognition for her performance in a university talent search.
