New Yorker Norah Jones scored big with three Grammy awards on Feb. 13, two of them with the late legendary singer Ray Charles, and reaffirmed her standing as one of the world’s most talented singers.
Jones, who is a daughter of sitar maestro Ravi Shanker and record producer Sue Jones, won the ‘Record Of The Year’ along with Ray Charles for the track from ‘Genius Loves
Company;’ the ‘Best Female Pop Vocal Performance’ (for a solo vocal performance. Singles or Tracks only); for the song ‘Sunrise’ from her CD ‘Feels Like Home’ and the ‘Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals’ (for a collaborative performance, with vocals, by artists who do not normally perform together. Singles or Tracks only) with Charles for ‘Here We Go Again.’ “I think it just shows how wonderful music can be. It is at a hundred percent with Ray Charles,” Jones said after receiving her awards. Jones is in the midst of preparing for an Asia tour which begins on Feb. 27 and will take her to Singapore, Korea, China, Thailand, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. She is traveling with the Handsome Band.
Jones, 25, is already a veteran of Grammys despite her young career, having won five prizes at the 45th Grammy awards in New York in 2003.
Her ‘Come Away With Me’ took the ‘Album of the Year’ Award, as well as pop vocal album and female pop performance prizes.
She also took the ‘Best New Artist’ prize, while her track ‘Don’t Know Why’ was named record of the year. In 2003, after sweeping the Grammy honors, she said, “I never ever thought the music I made would be considered popular music.” Jones’s music is influenced by jazz. Her tiny Blue Note label sold more than 6 million of her debut album worldwide.
