Rep. Bobby Jindal lashes out at liberals in Congress
Lousiana’s Republican Congressman Bobby Jindal lashed out at what he considered “liberal” efforts to derail government support of faith-based organizations. In his ‘Weekly Update’ sent to the media and constituents, Rep. Jindal said it was “another in a long line of attacks on faith and the faith community.”

Robert Mueller praises FBI’s foreign partnerships in war on terror
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Robert Mueller praised his agency’s effective partnership with foreign countries in the war on terror and said he was enhancing FBI presence in crucial areas such as New Delhi. He also praised Pakistan and Afghanistan for interdicting the top Al Qaeda leadership and preventing further attacks on the United States.

Doris Matsui takes oath in House
Doris Matsui, widow of Rep. Robert Matsui, a longtime Democrat from California, was sworn in as the latest House Representative after she won a resounding victory in a special election to fill her husband’s vacant seat.

President Bush lauds role of allies, warns Syria and Iran
President George W. Bush on March 8 praised the efforts of allies like Pakistan in the war on terror as he mapped out his strategy for spreading democracy globally, especially in the Middle East. Addressing the National Defense University near Washington, the President delivered what many consider a landmark address outlining his agenda against terror for the next 4 years.

Air India’s Regional Director will leave for Mumbai next month
Seema Andhare, Regional Director, U.S. and Canada, Air India, has decided to leave for India, a few months earlier than her official tenure in New York would have ended, according to sources. Andhare cited personal reasons for her decision.

The White House has selected 10 South Asian Americans among the 108 Regional Finalists for the 2005-06 White House Fellows Program — one of the nation’s most prestigious programs for leadership and public service. The list was announced late last month.

Dr. Dave, Kulkarni among 22 elected to Morrison & Foerster law firm
Morrison & Foerster law firm announced on Feb. 10 that Dr. Raj Dave and Sunil Kulkarni were among 22 lawyers elected to the partnership of the firm, effective from Jan. 1, 2005. According to a press release, the new partners represent 11 of the firm’s 19 offices. Dr. Dave told News India-Times: “I feel quite honored to be elected as partner but I would be far more honored if we had many more attorneys of Indian origin becoming partners in major U.S. law firms.”

Drs. Dicksheet, Simjee recipients of AMA awards in medicine
Dr. Sharadkumar Dicksheet, plastic surgeon from Brooklyn, NY, is recipient of the American Medical Association’s (AMA), ‘Dr. Nathan Davis International Award’ in Medicine. The India Project to ‘Save the Disabled Children’ nominated him for his exemplary work in the field of plastic surgery. According to AMA, each year, he travels to the poorest regions of India for six to seven months and conducts free corrective plastic surgery camps.

Vivek Viswanathan is winner of the National Peace Essay Contest
The National Institute of Peace selected Vivek Viswanathan as the winner of the National Peace Essay Contest for his essay, titled ‘Establishing Peaceful and Stable Postwar Societies through Effective Rebuilding Strategy.’

Dr. Krishnamoorthy wins International Commission for Optics Award
Dr. Ashok Krishnamoorthy, distinguished engineer with Sun Microsystems in San Diego, CA, won the International Commission for Optics (ICO) Award. According to ICO, this award is given to an individual who has made noteworthy contributions to optics before reaching the age of 40.

The Association of College and Research Libraries’ (ACRL) named Dr. Ravindra Nath Sharma, director of the University Library at West Virginia State University Institute, West Virginia, the ‘2005 Academic/Research Librarian of the Year.’
