Dublin, Ga, Democrat Shyam Reddy decides to run for Secretary of State of Georgia
Democrat Shyam Reddy has announced his candidacy for Georgia Secretary of State. Born, raised and educated in Dublin, Georgia, Reddy received a B.A. in Political Science and Masters in Public Health from the Emory University.

By 2008, Americans entering U.S. from Canada, Mexico may require passports
AWestern Hemisphere Travel Initiative announced by the Departments of State and Homeland Security will require all U.S. citizens, Canadians, citizens of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, and citizens of Mexico to have a passport or other accepted secure document to enter or re-enter the U.S. by Jan. 1, 2008.

SAALT, NAPALC among 40 groups to write to Senate and House judiciary committees on post-9/11 civil rights concerns
The South Asian American Leaders for Tomorrow (SAALT) and the National Asian Pacific American Legal Consortium (NAPALC) –– an umbrella organization for Asian Americans, which includes South Asians –– are among the more than 40 rights civil rights, human rights, immigrant rights and civil liberties groups sent a letter on April 5 to members of the Senate and House Judiciary Committees calling on Congress to address a range of human rights, civil rights and civil liberties concerns many Americans have about the government’s post-9/11 polices, a press release said.



HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

Yogi Bhajan’s contributions recognized on House floor
A bipartisan resolution honoring the life of Sikh American leader Yogi Bhajan was passed in the House unanimously yesterday. House Concurrent Resolution 34, “honoring the life and contributions of Yogi Bhajan, a leader of Sikhs, and expressing condolences to the Sikh community on his passing,” needed a two-thirds majority and was passed by a vote of 405 to 0. It was introduced by Rep. Tom Udall (D-NM) back on Jan. 26.



SENATE,HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEES

Hearing on USA Patriot Act
At a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing for renewing the Patriot Act, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and FBI Chief Robert Mueller came in for strong criticism from Democratic senators as well as the Republican chair of the committee Arlen Spector (R-PA) regarding use of certain provisions in the Act and the alleged lack of speedy response from the agencies on requests for information from legislators.

Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice has said India and Pakistan today recognize the need for better relations so that they can pursue their independent goals. And Washington has learnt the hard way that if it abandons Pakistan again, it could lead to an untrammeled growth of terrorism, as in the past.

F-16 to India merely at bidding information stage
Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice says so far the deal over F-16 aircraft to India is nowhere near the selling of aircraft or even co-production.

Ackerman sponsoring bill to block F-16s to Pakistan
Congressman Gary Ackerman (D-NY) and Co-Chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans, is introducing legislation on the House floor next week that calls for prohibiting all F-16 fighter plane sales to Pakistan unless Islamabad allows American investigators access to A.Q. Khan, the “father” of Pakistan’s nuclear program who is currently under house arrest. Extracts from the text of the bill provided by Rep. Ackerman’s office:

Srinagar/Muzaffarabad: The political barriers that divided Kashmir for half a century dissolved in that one brief emotional moment on April 7 as the subcontinent’s “bus of hope” reunited people and charted a new route to peace between India and Pakistan.

U.S. hails as ‘historic’ the bus across divided Kashmir
The U.S. on April 7 described the inaugural bus service between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad as a “historic moment” for India and Pakistan, especially for people across divided Kashmir.

‘Alien smuggling operation’ busted; 4 of Indian origin held
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has busted “an extensive international alien smuggling undercover operation” involving four men of Indian origin after a two-year-long undercover operation.

Bangladeshi girl detained for violating immigration laws
Two 16-year-old girls living in New York have been detained since last month on immigration violations amid concerns they were potential recruits for a suicide bomb plot that never materialized, The Associated Press quoted officials as saying on April 7.

Chahal wins gruelling Daily News spelling bee contest
Rajdeep Chahal, a 12-year-old eighth grade student of Middle School 137 in Ozone Park, N.Y., last week won a gruelling two-hour, 36 round spelling bee showdown with Omari Saxby in the 41st Daily News spelling bee which attracted 38 contestants from across NY.

Dr. Kang is selected for SDCIA Lectureship
SOUTH DAKOTA — Dr. Manjit S. Kang, professor of quantitative genetics in the Agronomy and Environmental Management Department, LSU AgCenter, Baton Rouge, LA, was selected for the 2005 South Dakota Crop Improvement Association (SDCIA) Lectureship, sponsored by the SDCIA and the Plant Science Department of the South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD.

Indian firms seek larger share in health care outsourcing
Health care services are emerging as the next big thing in India’s push to grab an ever larger share of the outsourcing market with companies such as Fortis Healthcare and SRL Ranbaxy setting the pace. Both Fortis and SRL are part of Ranbaxy Laboratories, India’s largest pharmaceutical company which is fast growing in the U.S. market as well.

India should watch out for China in IT services, says Satyam founder
China could emerge as a threat to India as an IT services power if the latter does not build on its lead in the sector, the head of one of India’s top computer companies said in New York on April 6.

Reuters workers mounting a legal challenge against outsourcing to Bangalore
A union representing U.S employees of Reuters Group Plc. is mounting a legal challenge against outsourcing of many of their editorial jobs to Bangalore in India.
