Mehta named president of New York Philharmonic
Zarin Mehta, executive director of the New York Philharmonic, was on June 2 named its president. Mehta will keep the title of executive director, which he has held since September 2000, and his day-to-day responsibilities will not change, the orchestra said in a statement.
"With each season, he is steadily transforming this Orchestra, and this organization, to meet the demands of the 21st century. He has won the total trust and admiration of the organization, and, I believe, has set a standard in the industry," New York Philharmonic chairman Paul Guenther said in the statement.
Among Mehta's accomplishments in four seasons with the New York Philharmonic was the hiring of renowned conductor Lorin Maazel as the orchestra's music director in September 2002.
Mehta, who was born in Mumbai, is the son of violinist and conductor Mehli Mehta.
