M.S. Swaminathan heads national farmers’ panel

M.S. Swaminathan
Son of B.P.R. Vittal, noted economist, civil servant and a former member of the Finance Commission, Baru was a Watumull Fellow at the East-West Center in Hawaii and has served as a consultant to the United Nations Development Program. A Ph.D. in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Baru was also on the faculty of the University of Hyderabad before he took to journalism.

A fresh allocation of $265 million to boost food security and a biotechnology regulatory body are among measures recommended by newly-appointed chairman of the National Farmers’ Commission M.S. Swaminathan to help India achieve higher agricultural production.
