The Medical Society of New Jersey (MSNJ) has installed Dr. S. Manzoor Abidi as its president. He is the first Asian Indian physician to be named to the top position of the society in its 238-year history, a release said. Founded in 1766, the Medical Society of New Jersey is a voluntary association of 8,500 physicians statewide, whose mission is improving the health of New Jerseyans and acting on behalf of its members in legislative and regulatory matters.

Abidi, a practicing neurologist in Maple Shade since 1972, assumed the position as MSNJ’s 212th president during the Society’s Annual Meeting held at the Borgata Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City recently. “It is an honor and privilege to serve as MSNJ president,” said Dr. Abidi in the release.

“My role as an advocate for New Jersey physicians is equal only to my duty to improve the safety and quality of health care for our patients. This includes stopping intrusions by various allied health care professionals who wish to perform certain procedures, but lack the proper training and qualifications.”

Born in Lucknow, he emigrated to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1965 for a residency in internal medicine. After that he moved to the East Coast for a psychiatry residency at Philadelphia General Hospital (University of Pennsylvania) and a neurology residency at Temple University Hospital between 1966 and 1971.
