‘Excellence in Teaching’ award for IACPA’s Nurnberger
By Arvind Padmanabhan
WASHINGTON: Ralph Nurnberger, who assisted Gopal Raju to establish the Indian American Center for Political Awareness (IACPA) in 1994, was awarded the ‘Excellence in Teaching Award’ by the Georgetown University Graduate School of Liberal Studies. Nurnberger helped establish and maintain IACPA’s ‘Washington Leadership Program (WLP).’ He is the only professor to receive this award at the May 2003 graduation ceremony.
His teaching abilities and understanding of the American political system has been an invaluable asset for the WLP, as he has been able to provide insights and guidance to the over 100 Indian-American students who have participated in this prestigious program.
Citing student evaluations that applaud his insight and experience, the faculty of Georgetown’s Liberal Studies department acknowledged Nurnberger’s intellectual understanding and historical perspective, as well as his generous guidance and intellectual integrity.
Nurnberger, who concentrates his practice on lobbying matters related to foreign policy and high technology and is a government affairs counselor in Preston Gates Ellis & Rouvelas Meeds LLP, has been a member of the Georgetown Liberal Studies faculty since 1975. He teaches courses on international relations and the American political system.
His most recent courses dealt with domestic and international ramifications of 9/11 and American foreign policy in the post-cold war era.
A frequent speaker on political and foreign policy topics, Nurnberger’s articles have appeared in News India-Times, The Washington Post, The Washington Times, Christian Science Monitor, Baltimore Sun and numerous journals. He recently completed a volume entitled ‘Lobbying in America.’
Prior to joining Preston Gates, Nurnberger worked on the staff of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee as a lobbyist at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the Center for Strategic and International Studies and at the U.S. Department of Commerce.
“Ralph has always been a teacher in residence among the Preston policy team. His counsel on international policy matters continues to be a valuable asset to our clients,” says Mark Ruge, chair of Preston Gates’ federal policy practice.
