Bangladeshis among 4 countries added to special registration list
By Ela Dutt

The Department of Justice on Jan. 15 added Bangladesh and four other countries to the list of those whose nationals who are required to register with the Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS) while they are here on temporary visas.

Despite criticism of the ‘Special Registration’ process for young males from largely Middle Eastern and Muslim countries, the Justice Department added Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Kuwait, and Jordan as countries whose citizens or nationals here in the U.S., will have to register with the INS between Feb. 24 and March 28.

Meanwhile, nationals from Group 1 (Iran, Iraq, Libya, Sudan or Syria) and Group 2 (Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Eritrea, Lebanon, Morocco, North Korea, Oman, Qatar, Somalia, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen) have been given more time to register. If they missed the Dec. 16 deadline, they may register with the INS between Jan. 27 to Feb. 7, according to the Council on American Islamic Relations.

When Muslims were detained as they went to register in California last week, cries of rights violations reverberated within the civil rights movement and activists groups particularly since most of the detentions were because of expired visas or those in the process of being extended.
