The Indian American Center for Political Awareness (IACPA) today released a
comprehensive report on the Indian American community. The report, entitled
A Portrait of the Indian American Community: an in-depth report based on the
US Census, is the first of its kind to use Census data to look at population
trends specifically for the Indian American community. The report looks at
Indian American population trends, including geographical and age
breakdowns, elderly issues, voter registration trends, educational
attainment statistics and employment/income/poverty figures.
IACPA used US Census Bureau data to compile a detailed picture of the Indian
American community. The image that emerges paints a picture of a diverse
community. IACPA Chairman Gopal Raju said, ³By looking at a unified,
quantitatively based picture of the community, we can better understand the
community and represent its needs to policymakers. The data is not always
easy to gather let alone understand, but presented in a clear and easy
manner, hopefully this report will shed new light on the Indian American
community.²
The Indian American community has long been described as a wealthy and
well-educated community; this report attaches values to those statements.
Additionally, the report outlines and quantifies such figures as Indian
American voter registration and turnout as well as Social Security usage,
age distribution and citizenship rates.
The report can be found on IACPA¹s website at
IACPA is a national non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the
participation of the Indian American community in public policy and the
political process. IACPA is also a strong advocate for stronger civil
rights and better immigration and hate crimes legislation. Additionally,
IACPA runs the Washington Leadership Program (WLP), an intensive program
that places Indian American university students on Capitol Hill as interns
to gain a behind the scenes understanding of Congress. The WLP is sponsored
by New York Life Insurance Company.
