Hate crimes are criminal acts against individuals because of their membership in a specific group, such as religion, race, color, national origin, gender, disability, or sexual orientation. They are different from other forms of crime in that they are usually perpetrated to intimidate an entire community; in this sense, hate crimes are a form of domestic terrorism.
